In practice, plenty of bookkeepers land here because the direct download or bank-feed connection keeps failing, the QBO file gets rejected by QuickBooks, or they need older activity that only the CSV will give them in a usable shape. When the native route misbehaves, the CSV is the dependable fallback, and QuickBooks won't accept a raw Amex CSV without column mapping.

How to import American Express statements into QuickBooks
- Export your transactions from American Express online banking as CSV or Excel.

American Express-specific things to watch for
- Download window is limited. The Amex Activity export only covers about the last 12-18 months, in 90-day-at-a-time slices, older history isn't available through this method, so convert each slice as you download it.
- Native QBO can still fail. Amex offers a .QBO Web Connect file, but if it errors on import or the bank feed won't connect, exporting CSV and converting it here avoids the problem.
- Import as a credit card. Upload the converted file into a credit card account in QuickBooks (not a checking account) so charges and payments land on the right side of the register.
- Extra detail columns. Amex CSVs include fields like Extended Details and Category that QuickBooks doesn't need; QBO Maker keeps the description, date, and amount and discards the rest.

How far back can I download Amex transactions?
The Amex Activity download covers roughly the last 12 to 18 months and lets you pull about 90 days at a time. Download each window as a CSV and convert it; anything older than that range generally isn't available through the export.
Why do my Amex payments show as negative in QuickBooks?
On a credit card, a payment reduces the balance and can appear as a negative amount. Import the converted file into a credit card account in QuickBooks rather than a bank account, and charges and payments will post to the correct side.
